British authorities has included eleven new countries to its official warning list regarding the threats of methanol contamination from contaminated beverages.

This updated travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol contamination.

Just recently, the government had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, after a number of serious events including the fatal loss of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can lead to blindness or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Used?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol commonly used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. It is not meant for drinking.

Although it is generated during the creation of spirits, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the distillation process.

However in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to detect.

Authorities' Guidance for Travellers

Foreign Office official a senior official emphasized that all travellers should know the signs of methanol poisoning.

"When you are consuming alcohol in foreign countries, choose reputable establishments and avoid homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official warned.

"If something appears suspicious, like a headache that's far more intense than typical or vision problems – seek medical attention right away."

The entire list of destinations listed as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
