Thunder Kick Off Championship Defense with Dramatic Overtime Triumph

The Thunder's star player scored the winning baskets late in double overtime as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP scored 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just mere seconds left in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a positive start.
Houston's Alperun Sengun led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also hit a career-high five three-pointers.
But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points, was instrumental alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Determination and defense," SGA commented of their performance. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
Prior to the tip-off, the team's championship banner was unveiled at their home court, while the players were presented with their title rings.
Oklahoma City beat the Indiana Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the team moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.
The Pacers will have the chance to secure some early revenge on this Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Rockets return to action on the same day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from Luka Doncic was not enough to prevent his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Golden State Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 for the road team.
Los Angeles were without the NBA's all-time leading scorer LeBron James as he recovers from a back issue.
